Guide – FFXIV – Final Fantasy XIV – NPC Support

Duty Support? Trust System? Adventurer Squadrons?!

Final Fantasy XIV is an MMO where you can fight together with people to defeat monsters in dungeons for example. Sometimes, depending on your chosen class and the time of the day, it’s not so easy to get a full party in a short amount of time.

If that happens, you can use NPCs, to do dungeons with!

But which one should you use? Duty Support.

To use it, simply go to the instance “Entrance” and it lets you enter with players or Duty Support. You can also open Duty Support from the menu system.

So Duty Support is the new kid on the block. It’s a more universal solution and it’s something you do not have to grind, upgrade, or care about. You simply open it and go into your chosen instance. It’s great.

The Duty Support system covers 15-90 instances. There are a few missing, but Square Enix is adding more and more supported instances with each patch.

Squadron is the “old system”. It’s the most unique. You can build your own squad of NPCs, but Duty Support is better in all regards. You have to build your squad with this one. You have to level them up. And you have to spend Grand Company seals to enter dungeons with them. These NPC characters will never have a “job”, they always come in with the base class, such as Gladiator.

Squadron covers level 15-60 instances.

Trust System is very similar to Duty Support, but you can play with the characters from the Main Story. Such as Y’shtola, G’raha Tia, and so on. You can even change their appearance before you enter a dungeon.

To unlock Trust, you have to complete the Main Scenario Quest of Shadowbringers.

Trust system covers level 71-90 instances.

How to unlock Squadron

How to get your own Squadron? You have to unlock it, via your Grand Company.

  • You need to be Level 47.
  • You have to reach Second X Lieutenant with your Grand Company.
    • To level your Grand Company you simply talk to the NPC, and they let you get a new rank by spending your Grand Company seals. To obtain more seals, you have to do FATEs for example.
    • Sometimes you need to do a quest with the Grand Company, that’s the easier one.
    • Always make sure to clear out your Hunting Log after you obtain a new rank: Because you get a specific Grand Company hunting log. Usually, these are in dungeons, because they require dungeon-specific monsters. If you are high-level, you can go in alone, unsync. If not, a friend can help you, or you can just queue as normal.
  • You’ll need to do the “Rising to the Challenge” quest before you can start this one. It’s called “Squadron and Commander”

Once you have all those, the Barracks will be accessible at your Grand Company. I won’t go into details, you will be guided through every step. But, here are the main steps:

  • First, you will need to get a new recruit to have a team at all.
  • You have to do Challenge Log things. Even just running the daily Duty Roulette works. After you run a few dungeons, go to your barracks and you should have a recruit.
  • Once the team is ready, the NPC will let you know what to do. First, you send them on a mission, then on a training. After that, you just send them on missions, train them if they can’t do a mission just yet, and that’s about it. Spam missions until you get them max level.
  • Don’t worry about your team until you max level them out! Once you max them out, the new recruits will be high-level, so don’t bother hiring lower-level ones first.

What’s the point of all this? You can do dungeons with your selected NPCs. There is a lot to choose from.

You can even glam the recruits. 🙂

How to unlock Trust System

Just do the Main Story Quests and you will unlock it eventually. Once you unlock it, it’s available, there are no extra steps involved like with the Adventurer Squadron.

How to unlock Duty Support

You will receive Duty Support as you progress. It’s the first one you unlock.
